About Black Awareness Community Development Organization

Our History

Black Awareness Community Development Organization (BACDO) is a project which was initiated in the California prison system in the late sixties in response to a call by African American prisoners for an institutionally approved cultural and educational program. In 1992 Jitu Sadiki and Olatunji Shomari saw a need after the civil unrest in Los Angeles to reduce incarceration and recidivism, develop culture awareness, create Black & Brown Alliance, and Re-Entry services inside and outside prison walls.

Our Mission

To empower formerly incarcerated people re-entering communities with tools and resources that support employment and housing in an effort to reduce recidivism in marginalized communities.

Our Partners

We partner with Black August Los Angeles, F.U.E.L Families United to End LWOP, Think Outside the Cage - KPFK 90.7fm, The Fair Chance Project, Barios Unidos
